At AW we are increasingly using recycled materials to manufacture our carpets. By giving materials a new life, we not only reduce the amount of waste, we also take an important step in reducing our carbon footprint. Indeed, the use of virgin raw materials causes considerably greater CO2 emissions than the reuse of existing ones.
The Sedna® carpet creation process begins with rescuing waste materials that would otherwise harm the environment, such as abandoned fishing nets, fabric scraps, carpet and industrial plastic. Thanks to Aquafil, the company behind the Econyl® yarn, these materials are collected from oceans and landfills from various locations worldwide before they are carefully sorted and thoroughly cleaned to extract as much nylon as possible. This is a crucial step as it helps to protect our ocean environments by removing fishing nets that would otherwise trap wildlife and destroy fragile ecosystems. It also prevents unnecessary waste by salvaging carpets and other scraps that would be destined for landfills.
The Econyl® regenerated nylon is skillfully processed into yarns and polymers specifically designed for the fashion and interior industries, like Sedna carpets.
Renowned fashion brands and carpet producers harness the power of Econyl® regenerated nylon to create innovative and sustainable products. Sedna carpets are born from this material. What makes Econyl® truly remarkable is its ability to be recycled indefinitely without compromising its quality. Our ultimate objective is to ensure that when customers no longer need the Sedna carpet Econyl®, they can be reintroduced into the Regeneration System, starting the cycle anew.
All too often these bottles are carelessly thrown away and end up in the plastic soup in our rivers: a real threat to the ecosystem. By putting plastic bottles in the correct recycling cycle, they are given a new use as a valuable raw material for numerous products, such as the high-performance ECO FusionBac. This strong & stable carpet backing makes the carpet easy to install, improves the heat and noise insulation and makes it last longer.
By using both Econyl® yarn and ECO FusionBac, the recycled content of the Sedna® collection is on average 67% depending on the range.
The minimum recycled content per individual range (dd. August 1st, 2023) is as follows:
This conscious choice of materials results in a carbon footprint that is also on average 70% lower than that of a similar carpet made with virgin polyamide and a traditional backing.
